lisztomania

the list, from a year and a half ago

*ideas about humans as earth dna
*thoughts on art vs science, or art cooperating with science. how the two relate
*trying to develope ideas about first world problems, how it relates to progress, and what kind of progress
*realization that i had when i was 11 or 10 comes back to haunt me as it relates to a theory of time. did i have it right when i was in 7th grade? do i even have it right now?does anyone?!

Thats a copy paste from the ACTUAL LIST I made long time ago. Its got a goofy look to it...

Well since Ive discussed a little about the dna idea, Ill be moving on in the list. I would like to keep poking away at the dna idea but I will continue that another time. The next item I have is art vs science which I was confused about when I reread the list but now I think I remember what I was thinking about and what I was referring to at the time. BUUUUUUUT I havent had any of those ideas on my mind as strongly as they were back then so Ill skip/combine that one with a new item on a new list. I HAVE however been thinking about the NEXT thingy44 on the list, my thoughts about "first world problems" and if they help to develop some progress in some way. Or maybe progress is the fuel for first world problems.

I recall seeing some goofy things online, pictures of people who are sorta sad with captions about how they dont get cell service or something? or a caption about how the coffee place didnt have enough creamer so they had to change their order and the people are crying. Or how the battery on their lap top is dying but the charger is in another room and its such a hassle. I believe most of these pictures reference things Im not to familiar with though, but I get the idea. The people are almost always affluent looking and acting rather dramatically upset about something very insignificant and they are titled first world problems or I think some of them might say white kid problems too. The idea is funny and obvious, rich white privileged kids complaining rather dramatically about very insignificant things, as i said. Its supposed to be funny. This brings to mind a conversation I recently had with a friend in reference to our humor. We would often point out things about people which we thought were funny, little actions and mannerisms that caught our attention and made us laugh. A lot of these observations were also of people doing things which we didnt really approve of, or perhaps actions which we would see as being unacceptable for ourselves. Things we wouldnt do because we just couldnt see ourselves doing them. And seeing other people actually doing these things or saying them was very funny to us. Being at a party and seeing a guy blatantly hitting on a girl who clearly wishes to just have fun with her friends, hearing the ridiculous things he says to her, thinking it is somehow acceptable? and attractive? Things which were a bit of a puzzlement to us were some of the funniest things, because it was a mystery to us how these people could reason what they did as being appropriate. A lot of our humor came from these observations and judgments of others. We would say sarcastic things to each other, as though we were giving answers that one of these people would give, playing the roll of the silly people. Eventually, our sarcasm became very over the top and we were no longer playing rolls of people who you would imagine actually exist, these were very dramatic, over the top reactions. They were the characters at stakes 10 as our acting teacher would put it, with every delivery of every line, or just about that extreme. We were, at this point, no longer making fun of people anymore, or rather no longer making fun of specific people we had seen. The kinds of things in these first world problems pictures online were the sort of silly problems we would create when being funny around each other.

It turns out, after laughing about these pretend people, that my friend and i have both encountered numerous individuals who fit the description of the characters we created. People finding reasons to be upset, pointing out how things around them arent conducive to their situation and thus they are allowed to be upset by it and their anger or dramatic depression is warranted because, well the store no longer has the high heel shoes that would go really really great with my dress!!!!! my life sucks. It is my contention that this behavior is seen in many areas of peoples lives. By that I mean, the idea that people deserve to have luxuries go their way and that, without those luxuries or circumstances going their way, there is merit to the resulting negative behavior, can be seen in not just a small niche area of someones life.

This behavior can be obvious in my first example. Maybe we could call that the shopping or consumer area. I think there might be other "areas" which I could examine but I will focus on the consumer area. The "struggles" a rich white privileged kid can go through range from being upset that they are only allowed to get one pair of new shoes when they really want two pairs, even though they have plenty at home, to being upset about being forced to get a different kind of cell phone case than the one which they really want, because the store only holds one kind and, well they certainly cant wait to find the one they want cause who waits for anything anymore?
Consumer first world problems are probably the route of the whole notion of first world problems, as far as the modern world is concerned. Or maybe a better way to say that is that the consumer/capitalist system is the current driving force to maintain a steadfast and exponential first world problem attitude increase within the American zeitgeist of the last...100 years? maybe more. I think it was first introduced around the time of the spanish american war, when the US was trying to push their title of being a world power. News papers during the yellow journalism era helped to further the choices choices mentality once the monopolies of the mid and late 1800s were being broken up. The introduction of industrial production and manufacturing of goods was probably the initial grandfather of first world problems. Maybe we should dub two important aspects in the whole examination of first world problems. One aspect is what I will call the problem and the other I will call the solution, for lack of better, more thought out terms. Conditions for creating enough goods for consumers in the late 1700s up through the 1900s were not optimal, thinkers and inventors came up with ideas to fix these problems. Solutions to these problems could be anything introduced during those years, the cotton gin up to the  modern assembly line and modern factory work. While these solutions were becoming more and more refined, items that I would refer to as luxuries were introduced to the american mainstream. Washing machines, vacuums, refrigerators and the like were products that people could now afford and utilize to help maintain their american life style. Thanks to the end of the monopolies, the american mindset became engrained with the notion that choices are what we have and deserve. This belief that we need to have so many choices when going to the store boomed after the second world war. From cereal to cars, people could choose just the kind of product they wanted, and rightly so. Who is going to tell me that I can only get one kind of...well anything! Im an american citizen and I deserve it! One might contend that the cold war had a major impact in pushing the, as far as americans were concerned, important idea that choices are american, and having little or no choices is anti american or even communist. And for the better part of, 50, 60, 70 years you would not want to be dubbed communist. Its still a dirty word and title to a lot of people.  Through advertising, consumers were pushed to buy more and more, believing(?) that buying these things would, at first, be a symbol of their status among a classless (ha)society and I believe eventually, that these products might actually make them feel better. By them, I mean consumers. It is around the time that people more widely start to believe that the products the advertisers are pushing on them will make them happy that I believe the current first world problems attitude emerges. It became common place to own a tv, to own a car, to eat three times a day with dessert. Kids became a larger target audience for products, for music, for toys, clothes and the like. Kids who had old worn out clothes were probably picked on by others who had the latest fashion.  It might be the first time that people who already lived in a privileged society started to feel bad for what the lacked. This early introduction in children to ridicule based on living "without" is what helps to perpetuate the must have and must own so that we are happy mentality. How often have you heard people, whether referring to their children or their phantom future children, remark on how they will not allow them to struggle and go without, like they had to when they were growing up? This is nothing new, people have said that for hundreds and im sure thousands of years. But advancements in technology and daily life have made just the proverbial basics for an american such a comfortable life. People living in a very privileged society are still saying they will not have their children go without. Im reminded of something I read online regarding a day camp and the snacks served to the kids. One parent sent an email to the counselors of the camp, saying that they became aware that the snacks served were not name brand and they were concerned.

Ok, this is only the introduction of my topic. A little bit of background and understanding so that you might better understand what first world problems means to me. And when I say you, of course, Im talking to no one because no one reads this. In any case, what Ive wondered is whether these first world problems have anything to do with first world progress. And im not really sure where to go from there. Its just a question and I dont have an answer. I can reason out why I think the first world problem attitude fuels capitalist progress, but it doesnt mean its true. But it could be true, and my examination of something as simple as the funny first world problems pictures online got me curious. Im curious if consumers striving for an easier life helps to push back on the companies that push them to buy their products. It seems to me like an interesting relationship made even more interesting. The producer and consumer relationship. The producers need consumers so that they can exist, and in turn the consumers become dependent on the producers. With the first world problem attitude, I think the consumers might be pushing back on the producers for better, easier, faster products. Or you could say that the producers are just playing the consumers like a fiddle, creating products that will go bad in only so many years or months, forcing the consumers to buy again and again with the added appeal that their products are now faster than the last. How many different levels of iphone are out now? 5? im typing this in mid 2013 and i think the iphone 5 is the latest model or what have you that is out. And how often do these new models come out? And how much better, what ever that means, is the latest model from the last or the first? Isnt it very obvious that these companies already have technologies ready to go out on the market so far in advance that they are first selling just slightly better products every year, with holding technologies so that they have something to put in an updated version of the product down the line? Im sure I am very uninformed and I am thinking about putting a disclaimer at the beginning of every post about how uninformed i am, but that has been my understanding of how you really control the consumer, by allowing only so much advancement in a  desirable technological product so that you can sell millions and then a year later, guarantee sells similar to last years by selling a slightly better product. It is also good artillery in the producer battles of technological goods. If another company is claiming a ground breaking product, you can take solace in knowing that your company has, what you might call back up advancement in its products.

Ive had this idea for a long time and I think once I write it out it will be obvious that it has been with me for a long time because it might sound very naive. I had this idea that, in a very strange and interesting way that i am JUST now, as I stated this sentence, realizing has returned to me but through a different train of thought. But in any case, the idea I had when I was younger was that people returning to an agricultural way of life would be beneficial. That it would benefit peoples physical and possibly social health. Driving everywhere and getting all your food from fast food places makes you fat and out of shape. Thinking that it is important to find out what happened to the people on the reality shows keeps you sitting on the couch and helps to keep you fat. Playing video games for hours and hours on end, trying to advance the life of a fictitious character keeps you on the couch and in a chair for hours and hours and hours. It was through these observations that I applied my understanding of how to solve these problems. In the producer mindset the only problem sitting on the couch created for them was that people were to lazy to get off the couch and go buy the products. That was rectified with online shopping. My solution was to first think about the problem in a different light. After that I could try to reason out a solution. It seemed to me that the progress being made was primarily progress in a system that relied on controlling people. If people could be controlled then progress was being made. Or rather a solution that keeps people in control is one which fits with the rules of the system that we live in.

AAAAAANYway, my idea was to do away with this progress. If you were to tell me about any kind of advancement in the last 200 years I would have shot you down with how it eventually negatively impacted people. Or how these advancements forced further industrialization which created more problems. My questioning of progress and its positive and negative effects has come up again through other avenues of thought which I may cover in a later post. But in terms of first world problems, it seemed rather clear to me that the first world problem attitude helped to fuel progress in a capitalist system. Maybe i can create a path of how these first world problems create technological progress.

Advancements in technological goods creates advancements in technology in many areas. Intermingling of technological progress is sorta like legal creep, but in a "good" way. The introduction of this progress into the mainstream creates a high standard of living. People walk around with computers in their pockets which the most advanced world powers could only hope to possess 50 years ago. If you currently dont have the latest update of a product, your american mind might accidentally creep through and you might feel bad for yourself. BUT, this desire to attain the high standard of living, which is believed to be normal, must clearly help to perpetuate the push for progress. If the most desirable products are the ones which are at the head of their field, developmentally and technologically, then the company with the fastest computer with the most memory will be top dog. By consumers wanting more and more, we have created a system that is bent on progress in these areas which help to keep companies and the more recently familiar 1%, or bourgeoisie in control of the rest of the people, or the proletariate. In this, the two classes are striving for the same thing. With better goods, a majority of the proletariate find themselves unknowingly supporting the bourgeoisie. Not only does this solution to the proverbial problems of producer fit the bill in how it helps to keep the people in control, it also asserts that the average american will not stand for a lower standard of living, believing it is their right to live with so much apparent freedom and technology at their disposal, and that any place wishing to take that from them should be stopped because it is anti american to think otherwise. And this attitude keeps technological progress going and going and going.

I feel as though there is so much more I could say about this. I like to think through all the different angles of my topics, or at least acknowledge that there are so many ways to discuss and critique the topics which i think about, but I feel like Ive covered the topic I wanted to, without creeping too far into other areas. With that being said, Id also like to mention that most of the things which occupy my mind often involve so much more than just one area of that topic. Like first world problems. In order for me to feel like Ive explored my thoughts I need to examine and critique and ask why why why and consider contributing factors which some people might think unrelated. It makes for a much longer blog post, but I dig it.

Awesomew

awesomew.

Alright, Im back. I figured out how to sign back into this thing. I was having a hard time cause google buys everything and integrates all of these things into one thing, so you just need one username n password or whatever and then you are signed into every thing you got...or something like that. That would be nice , if only you could remember your password for everything, which I dont. I dont even remember my username for most things. Actually, I usually use the same password. Which is thingy44 or Thingy44 or just thingy, something involving the word thingy and maybe the number 4. Since no one reads this thing, Its not as though Im risking giving out vital information. Anyhootnany, I dont have too many accounts out there so I dont have too much to complain about. Actually I think I do have a lot of random accounts out there in internet world, accounts which I dont use at all. This is the only account I can think of...but Im also not thinking that hard. SO YEA!

Ive not used this blog in quite some time, and the last few posts were not done with any effort which I felt helped my interests further down the road. Well, maybe they will, but not in the way that some of my other posts have. I enjoyed when I used this blog to spit out whatever stupid things I had bouncing around in my brain throughout the day. I stopped doing that, then my computer stopped working, and then I suppose I had a reason for not blogging. But now I have a computer to use and Ive had a strong desire to spit my ideas somehwere. I think I will start up by completing that list which I made a long while ago, when I decided I would start to devote a little more time to this blog and then rather quickly halted all initiatives I had. The ideas on that list have been popping up in my head and Ive related some of those ideas to events Ive been witnessing more and more. Ive also recently tried to adopt a new mission statement?(very loosely using that word)for my life, and it has brought about some other ideas. Ive been influenced by my friends greatly in the past few months, which they most likely are not aware of, as well as the relationship of my employer. Ive acquired new roommates and Ive gained more insight to social interaction, cultural norms, motherculture neglecting her daughters and Ive begun questioning the right and wrong of everything. New opinions on wether there is such a thing as right or wrong, wether opposites actually exist, or wether opposites are the only way anything can exist, if the notion of impressing an individual can only exist with rules and in a system, and what the real world is. I also grew my hair out longer than I have before and have been slowly cutting it and now look like a belong in "civilized" society.

It looks like I should start a new list of things to cover. I would like to try and reason all of these ideas out so that I might have a better understanding of the things in my head and of the things that influence them.  Lets talk about stuff.

dna, but first

k so its time i start work on my list of topics...but first, i had an idea. i think i should start to ask questions. if anyone does read this....(HA) id like to give them something to outwardly think about. so i figured i could do this thing where i just sorta ask a question at the end of posts or just post a question for people. now most of the stuff i put on here isnt actually any kind of solution, it typically leaves me with more questions, but whatev. so i think ima do that at the end of this post. also i listened to ariel pinks haunted graffiti TERRIFIC song round and round basically the whole time i wrote everything in this post.

but

moving on

DNA! now i had this thought a few weeks ago and its kind of a simple notion. basically my idea is that people are the dna of the earth. NOW, with that being said, i should also mention that im not a very knowledgable person. so most of my talk comes from my extremely limited know how on everything i talk about. i was talking to a friend about this and i kind of reasoned out that thats probably what turns heads more so than a person who actually knows what they are talking about. typically the loudest person, the ones who chant their slogans that rhyme and are catchy, arent the smartest people. they are just loud and in peoples faces and attitude tends to get mistaken for accuracy. mixed with someone who doesnt quite know what they are talking about but believes it beyond any kind of reason, well thats where you get people like rush limbaugh and adolf hitler. im not saying rush limbaugh is evil in the sense that hitler is, but they can both be very convincing and very wrong at the same time. i dont really have attitude and i dont assume that im right about a lot, but i aslo dont know a lot and am writing about what i dont know. so maybe i should designate this as my disclaimer. there ya go, i talk about stuff i dont know about, but i understand that i dont know a lot about a lot and if anything, i think thats a least one smart thing i can say.

BUT, back to dna. so like i said, the idea is rather simpley stated, people as the dna of the earth. I thought about this when i was cooking a few weeks ago. probably over a month now actually. And i was just thinking about how it seems that everything can have a question attatched as to why it is and how it is that things do what they do. Thats pretty broad, but it applies to a lot. for example, flowers have petals and we think they are pretty. they also smell nice. now, theres a reason for that. if you believe in the idea of an inteligent creator, then the answer can be easy, well god made it for bugs and so that, i dont know, people like em too, i dont know. something like that. but to say that theres a reason for the flowers to be like that without the notion of an intelligent creator, well it still sounds like one is talking as though someone made things the way they are in a very distinct way. but nayway, flowers tend to be attractive to people. turns out they are also attractive to bugs and animals. not as much animals, but bugs yeah. they appeal to bugs and the bugs go " hey alright lets go check out this righteous flower, smells pretty fly and i bet i can get some food from there." and thats what the bug says, just like that. so the bugs go fly on the flower, get pollen and junk on em, then they fly off. bugs attract other animals, like birds, which eat bugs. when a bird is in the same field as the bug, and it lands around the flowers, it gets a bunch of flower junk on it, so that when it takes off, it will spread the flower junk just like the bug, but the possibilities of distance is much broader with the birds. so i guess one could say that maybe the reason flowers are pretty and smell nice is soooo, what? they can attract animals? and then what? the animals can spread their seed?

is the same true for everything? now it might not be exactly true that everything wants another animal to spread its seed, but it might be true that things want theirs seeds to be spread. and this i feel should be assumed as a subconcious act. if we assume the flowers goal is to spread its seed, well thats not assuming that the flower is conciously doing this. but there is something in the flower that has developed, knowing just how it should act in order to stay alive. if there werent, then the flower wouldnt be there. i think things have sort of gone beyond coincidence ever since the earth came into creation and intelligent life sprung up on here. So what is telling the flower how to evolve (should you believe in evolutiuon)? most people agree (and by most people i mean most people who actually think about this stuff, not someone who just agrees cause they heard it on a tv special) that the thing driving the flower is its dna. its something that is inside all living things and it turns out it helps to distinguish the difference between that species and another species. it is assumed that the goal of a living things dna is to spread itself, to stay alive, and to just keep its strand going.

so i was thinking at the time about space, space travel, man going to the moon, the different goals throughout time that man has set out to accomplish. lotsa stuff. it basically made me think about why on earth would we want to go to the moon?! where does that come from? why? just, why has that been an idea for so long and why did we do it? It made me think about something my friend used to do with his friends when he was little. when he and his friends would hang out around his house, they would stand by his neighbors driveway, and at the end of the driveway there is a shiney polished silver painted rock about the size of a soccer ball. it gave off a bit of a glow when a light shone on it and they thought it was so neat. they would go over to it, talk about how it must be this special space rock, they would crowd around, staring at the covetted object, touching it every now and then. In reality, it was just so cars would see the end of the driveway at night. also, the dogs on the street used to pee on it.

But thats what i thought of the conquest to the moon. It was this tremendous staple in the sky, like the sun. Its been there for every single person whose ever lived. even if you are blind and dont have sight, it was at least known that there was this massize thing, a white orb that hung in the sky. can you imaging what people thousands of years ago used to think about it? people who helped to create the very first forms of any kind of religion centered their lives around these objects, the sun and the moon. thats how important they were. People didnt understand it and because of that there came to be some sort of power with held in this thing that was unattainable. maybe if we worshiped it, SHOWED it that we are thinking about it, maybe if we GO there!

well thousands of years later people said " hey you see that thing?"

"what, you mean the moon?"

"yeah! i bet i can get there"

"bet i can get there before you can!"

and then we got there. i say we, i had nothing to do with it. but if there were an intelligent creator, imagine him looking at people constructing these rockets that are meant for one use and then they are junk. they build suits to wear so they can SURVIVE IN SPACE, and then these little tiny ships to help get them, TO THE MOON! imagine god watching the world, watching as everyone on earth is watching just a few people going to the moon! its rather hilarious to me. i think about the astronauts, if god had revealed himself to them then, i just think of them looking over and giving him a thumbs up and a goofy childish smile, like the friends standing around the "space rock" in the neighbors yard. "Check it out mom! we're at the space rock!"

so why did we go there? now there was obviously a space race in the 50s and 60, who could basically dominate the realm of space? but the idea of going to space and the moon can also be, and often is, attributed to the notion of manifest destiny. colonate another area, spread our way of life there. so this made me think that maybe the goal of spreading our seed is so that we can go to other places in space. and colonating other plants might be like saying, well maybe we are actually doing the EARTHS work. maybe every living thing is a development of the earth trying to create something that will spread the seed of the earth. I was talking about this with someone and tossed around some notions that, if that were the case then maybe people would assume the earth would be a world in which it is suitable for a giant fungus which can survive in a vacum might grow a tremendous staulk and launch a massize spore that would shoot out into space and someday land on a planet where it might be able to survive. or that the earth would develope a bird that is so big that it could take off into the reaches of deeps space. The thing is, none of these ideas really make sense right now. they are kinda neat to think about, but what is needed is a creature that can understand that theres an atmosphere which we and the earth lives in. outside of that atmosphere, we cant survive. and if we are going to colonate another planet, well we need to be smart enough to know what has to happen in order to be able to survive that atmosphere. A giant spore might be able to launch into space, probably not though cause the prepulsion required is immense. there would have to be some sort of immense electro magnetic disruption inorder for a spore to even leave the earth, in which case, the earth would thusly be distroying the possibility for other forms of life that werent adjusted to an earth that switches poles so radically. so this is probably out of the question for a planet. same for a big bird. a planet with a creature that is large enough to be able to push through the atmosphere would dominate the planet in a way that would destroy most other life on the planet. and that is quite an investement to make, for a planet to develope an animal that can colonate another planet, but what if it doesnt? it wouldnt be able to in reality. it would actually have to be a creature that can survive any atmosphere, any condition, anything really. if it cant, then the effort was wasted. So it makes sense that people are the product of an effort to try and relocate life from earth to other areas in space. if you think of the earth as a flower, and space as a field, and the time laps of the development of the earth as though it were more like the time it takes for a flower to grow and wilt, then its a little easier to understand how this might make sense. if it just doesnt make sense cause you think im an idiot, well then there ya go.

Now i thought that an argument for this could be "well if the goal of the earth and people is to get to space, why arent all of our efforts focused on that? why are there bands, why music, why is there entertainment, movies, fashion, art, why do we work for money and why do we have relationships?" it would stand as a pretty good question i think to wonder why people like lady gaga exist. in a world where the goal is to go to space, whats the point of lady gaga? well it just so happens that dna probably doesnt know it has a goal or that its dna. it just is, and it just works in a way that helps to manifest itself. if it stands to reason that people and animals, living things are the dna of the earth, then we probably wouldnt know it. we are just acting exactly as dna, seeing different situations and learning how to act when those situations occure so that next time we will be safe. another thought is that all of every other effort that people put their mind too, music, art, entertainment, anything other than going to space, maybe that is all neccesary to go to space. perhaps it is neccesary to have lady gaga so that, without these other investments, other breakthroughs might not have occured. perhaps people need to be distracted so that, in case they arent interested in space travel, they could be interested in something that might eventually help with the space effort in a way they couldnt have seen. im not sure. i could use more arguments going against this little theory thing to help with my idea. i also dont know anything about rna, which i believe is a precursour to dna, and i dont really know anything about dna. im just an idiot tpying about stuff i dont know :)

In any case! thats my basic idea about people and living things as dna of earth. there might be some more stuff and more ideas to go with it, but thats the basic idea.

question:
i was listening to some science radio show and one of the people mentioned babe ruth pointing with his bat, to say "check it out, ima knock it outta the park" and basically calling his hit. it got me thinking. When people talk about babe ruth, thats something that is most memorable about him. that he was that good to be able to call his hit. But im pretty sure he did that a lot and a lot of the time he didnt hit it where he said he would. Now he definitely was a great player, he hit the ball a lot and he was great. but he didnt always get it right when he called his shot. the truth is he did call the hit a lot and sometimes got it right. so i wondered if during the time, people thought he was a bit of a goof for always pointing and getting it right only half the time. the odds are pretty good that he would at least get a few right if he pointed every time. but when we think about him now, we dont think about that, or even know that. this makes me question:

if you had a chance to make an impact on people currently or to make more of a lasting impression of yourself throughout time, which would you choose? it stands for reason that if you perform an act that helps people at the time, then it will probably get you recognized throughout time. but in the case like the babe calling where he was going to hit the ball, thats more of an example that i mean. would you sacrifice looking goofy to be memorable or not? thats the question.

comparing tunes

here goes! sometimes when i hear certain songs they remind me of others. no big revelation, most people, i think, are reminded of songs when they hear other songs. i had this idea to post a few of the songs that i feel would make a great mash up to produce another song.

heres a link where you can listen to the whole album...feel like im talking to myself :)
http://www.nme.com/blog/index.php?blog=122&title=the_antlers_burst_apart_full_album_strea&more=1&c=1&tb=1&pb=1

the first song i got is from The Antlers latelst album, Burst Apart. It came out in 2011 and after listening to the entire thing off of nprs radio website i couldnt get enough. Fleet Foxes had an album that was also coming out around the same time, and although i feel that their first album, titled Fleet Foxes, was possibly one of the best of the decade, i just couldnt get into their second, Helplessness Blues. It might have had something to do with the way i was so enamored with their first album. I might do a comparison with them another time infact.

In any case, Bust Apart was playing constantly from my computer. I didnt have the album yet so i kept the npr station open all of the time and made sure to keep it playing all the time. this may have helped in slowing my computer down a bit actually. yikes. So i eventually got the album and listened to it even more.

What i enjoyed about the album, which i think is true of most people who enjoy an entire album, is that a majority of the songs are good. I dont really like using that word too often, id rather elaborate, but its true. I dont feel that there are many songs on Burst Apart that feel as though they are filler songs placed in between the hits. And the songs that would be considered filler, well i just like em!

Another lure for me was the sound of the album, which to me seemed like it had strong influences in other music and genres. i immediately heard an early 80s new wave sound to it. Now i know this is basically what current hipster tunes are sorta going for. But its great! New wave has some awesome sounds, to me it seems like a period in music when artists were working more with sound rather than instruments, because the synth came into mainstream. There were experimental musicians before new wave of course, but to me it seems like sounds rather than instruments were making more of an impact on the music, helping to create an atmosphere that is ...mmmsomewhat spacey? a lil futuristic, but i think mostly as though its on the edge of a breakthrough. as though new wave was an explorer and we were seeing glimpses of the future or new places that looked radical and cool. this is probably why new wave is a hit now too. because people felt like they caught a glimpse of something that they didnt completely get to grasp. perhaps thats another tempting lure to the new wave sound, that a good new wave song always leaves you wanting more and wanting to figure it out...er something.

The album also had an 80s flick soundtrack feel to me. Basically, i heard Neverending Story mixed with Spirits in the Material World by The Police.

In particular, the first minute or so of this one, before it gets into that goofy guitar part.

Mixed with this...

When i first heard No Widows http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KsFVH8vBH9A thats what i heard, a mix of the two. It just feels like a perfect mash up of the two to create this song that i love. the soft and dull percussion sounds are just like Neverending Story song and theres a couple sounds, maybe the organ in No Widows that reminds me of the strings in Spirits? not sure. just has the same kinda feeling? actually it doesnt. it doesnt really have the same feeling as the Nevereneding story tune or The Police, well maybe a little bit Neverending Story, but really just the two mixed together is whats the same to me. Also i think theres times when the vocals sound similar, maybe the way they say certain things.

Well there ya have it! my first mash up. theres another song that i wanted to do, but to tell the truth, i kinda forgot what song it was :P Thats, another post (reference to end of Neverending Story)

soon to come

need to put down some ideas that ive been TOSSIN around lately. soon to come:
*ideas about humans as earth dna
*thoughts on art vs science, or art cooperating with science. how the two relate
*trying to develope ideas about first world problems, how it relates to progress, and what kind of progress
*realization that i had when i was 11 or 10 comes back to haunt me as it relates to a theory of time. did i have it right when i was in 7th grade? do i even have it right now?does anyone?!
IDEA
*k so theres this idea i got based on the antlers latest album. it sounds like a lot of other stuff ive heard so i had an idea to play the different songs that i think sound like it and to basically, i guess, find two or three songs that, when mashed up, might make the one song in particular. this might not make sense to you...but thats ok. who am i kidding, you is me cause im the only one reading this...im pretty sure i am anyway. anyway, this idea might be pretty short lived cause theres only about two songs that i feel like are mash ups of other songs. but ill do it anyway! so boy! looks like ive got some writing to do. welp! time for sleep!

i was working in a blind womans appartmet today and every time im in her place i seem to wonder what it would be like to be someone who is born into a world and taught rules and a way to live based on the way other people live. shes not born into a place where it is common to not have sight. everything she does is based, not on the fact that she doesnt have sight, but on the fact that to have sight is a state of being and a majority of people have that ability and she does not. people are so used to calling things normal just because that is what they have observed to be the majority, but that doesnt make it an absolute. as though having sight is normal, or being born with the ability to hear is normal, or any other state that people assume to be normal because they probably have those abilities and so did their neighbor.

in any case, i was thinking about something that einstien said about the moon. he once asked someone if they really thought the moon existed only when they looked at it. this was probably a rehtorical question which came from his contemplating the peculiar nature of electrons which act as waves until they are viewed, then they act as particles. theres an experiment called the double-slit experiment where scientists shoot electrons at a sheet to try and understand if it acts like a wave or a particle. where it should act like a particle, it acts like a wave. so they decided to actually put a measuring divice at the object being shot threw. they found out that by simply trying to measure or by observing they changed the outcome of the electrons. it went back to acting differently. this might not make any sense. i mean it sort of doesnt anyway. i explained it poorly but thats alright, no one reads this so im confusing no one. but in any case, einstien asked if he thought the moon existed only when he looked at it, cause by simply viewing or observing particles, there is an effect that changes other particles, even if only on the quantum level. and i thought, well what makes anyone think the moon exists even when you do look at it? if it were in laymans terms, which state would be the normal one? just a thought i spose

thanksgiving

i was thinking about thankgiving and what people are celebrating when they celebrate thanksgiving. and how its suppose to be about the settlers and the natives kind of living together and whatnot. and it got me thinking about teaching a kid about thanksgiving, or any holiday really. its interesting to me to think that the world we live in is filled with rituals that we are just born into and we have no idea why we do them, but we do and they become a habit. then, years later, we learn about why it is we do these things. its easier to use something like a holiday as an example in this case. i was wondering what it would be like if we lived the other way around though, and i wondered what exactly that would be. and i think it would be, i suppose, making up rituals for one self and then executing them to the rules set forth. like i said, its sort of easy to use holidays as an example, but my initial holiday example can be related to all aspects of life. common social conventions and everyday life, from designating a room as a bathroom to saying hello and shaking hands when greeting someone. what if there were a world in which one lived, where they created everything for themselves instead of being born into it? i dont believe this has ever existed, truely. even before there were social conventions of being polite and intimate relationships, people were born into a hostile world where they were subject to the rules of life and death, and all the possabilities that could designate one being safe or in danger.i dont know why i thought this. i suppose i am interested in what this world would be like. this wont make sense to people. not that it matters because im the only one who reads it. but it sounds like what im saying is just stupid. of course there have to be rules that we cant even control before we ever enter any realm. small examples like say going to a dance. you are expected to arrive in certain atire, and while you are there it is expected that the atmosphere will be somewhat darker than the previous setting occupied, there will be music playing, and it is typical that one will dance at the event. this seems simple, but they are rules we inherently fall under. a much broader example is the way someone lives their life, and every single consiquence that is a result of the decisions we make, however i am only talking about man made rules, such as laws and colloquial protocol. on an even broader scale, there are the rules that are governed by science or perhaps i should say physics, both of which can be related to almost anything and everything. the rules we follow are only this way because of the planet we live on, and the existence of the planet is only because of the sun and the atmosphere, the space, and the other planets around it. and then there are rules that govern the way our solar system exists and then i suppose it goes on forever. maybe the idea that there was ever a world in which someone was born with no rules but the ones they created could be related to the notion of a god. it might be foolish to believe that in this world the person being born into the world is a person or that they were born at all, at least in the way we think. they may be relatable though. perhaps we are the rules and social convention of a person who was born into a world with no rules. just a thought. happy thanksgiving!

those days when all the fleeting whims, which started out as such and continued to burn much longer than just the simple strike of the match they should have been. those days when the actions you should have taken overshadow the mundane safe decisions youve made, the decisions youve robotically made, the ones that were made for you by mother culture, by mainstream, the decisions that werent decisions at all but in reality the lack of a decision and the acceptance of a path that has already been determined. those days when you dont wish to be still any longer, after you realize that even though youve spent dollars on gas and youve travelled 50, 60, 70 miles, you have simply been still all along, for far too long. those days when you question the exact reasons you are just where you are, the reasons you are not doing what you want, the reasons you let your refrigerator control where you go, the reasons your cell phone determines whether you can do this or not, the reasons you let your computer tell you where to live. those days when you realize youve listened to mainstream and, although you played dumb while pretending to believe what mother culture said, youve been the one fooled into just what she wanted, although you arent the true mindless believer, she turned you into a tool and a hypocrit. those days when the little music you make, when the few paintings you produce, when the chicken skratch youve sparcely kept skattered about, when the collections of photographs, the sketchbooks turned notebooks used as a constant reminder of new endeavors to pursue, when the mountain of songs used to bring you around the world is no longer enough. those days when you look at everything you own and no longer try to find a proper place for it to go, but realize that you are hold up in a room, in a building, and in a world filled with trash, with items used to keep humans and the mainstream obsessed with themselves, with their own progressive past that progresses to what really?, items used to keep the mainstream focussed on the desire to make money for the sake of making it, for the sake of occumulating the garbage they make, so that one can buy a piece of trash to help support another who must use that money to buy their own piece of trash so that they can feel the power of ownership, of calling something theirs because in reality they are all afraid of death and coming into the world with nothing and afraid of the unavoidable inevitability of leaving this world with nothing. those days when the inescapable notion of death does NOT scare you but the idea of death coming before you truly attempted to learn as much as you could about the world which you live for only a short time in does, and before youve broken from mainstream and showed the others what its like to be free, those who go to war and fight for freedom just to return to watch on a television what the freedom they protected means, those who would fire a gun in the face of freedom should they ever really come face to face with it because they all are just afraid of what they dont know and dont understand. those days when the plans youve made for the future, for your future, for a house, a garage, two cars, for a career, plenty of money, for a stable relationship and marriage, for a stable family and a stable life, when the safe plan for your life seems as though it has fallen from the face of the earth, with the only hope of a future existing in the whims which woke you in the first place, woke you from the false sleep and false dream impossed and willingly accepted. those days when you are sick of theoretical life kept traped in your head and wish to just bring it to the tangible world already, to live as you think and not as others think, to experince what you have in your head, but finally to pursue the mental in the physical world, to make yourself an honest person and to do what you will of yourself. those days when those hills which boarder the limits of your tangible mind, which frame the picture of your current safe life, when the horizon and the mountains in the distance seem to be calling to you for the last time, in their last effort to save you from the mountain of garbage you allow to keep you flustered and busy organizing, to save you from the money that does not exist but which is owed to the world. those days when you realize that the ties youve kept to all those who youve found to be beautiful, to those whove shared or learned about even a sliver of yourself and became interested, when the connections youve made to the ones youve shared something with are not as strong as you thought, but you still hold on because, although they hold you back from pursuing certain dreams, you also keep them there because you actually want to take them all with you, to show them what you think might be beautiful, to learn alongside them and share the beauty of the world with them. those days when the cold and the heat dont bother you not because it is a thing of beauty but because it has truly fallen into the realm of unchangables, because it keeps you in your thought and because the alternative would be the safe bet, because it is actually more work to remain so and because altering the self to feel as though you have power to alter the conditions of the environment is a lie and brings no new knowledge. those days when you simply wish to disconnect yourself from mother culture, but know that it can not be ignored, that mainstream has turned into a nuturer, one that helps support you so that you may ultimately support it. those days when you come to realize that as little as you are, as insignifigant as you may be and as minimal of an impact youve made on the world, what you feel is reaching to you from individuals years in the past and years to come, what you feel is branching out to you through out the FALSE invention of time, and that what is going through you and what you are going through is happening because you have become a vessel for the opposition, and you sit as a time bomb. those days when your silence is too loud, when the clouds are too beautiful, when the wind is too inviting and the weather too perfect, those days when the suitcase is empty or the suitcase is full, when the page is empty or the page is full, when youve nothing to say or youve said it all, when youre pulled by the song of mainstream as well as from natures call, those days when the paint just appears on the canvas as gold, those days when the extreme heat doesnt bother you, and neither does the cold, those days when you yearn for a friend wholl understand what you feel, those days when youd rather live existance alone because only the conclusions youve come to have ever been real, those days when you shake your head in disbelief of the beauty of everything in sight, those days when you finally have something to say but its grown too dark to write, those days when youre searching for an answer that you will never find, when the notes on your guitar will reach all of mankind, when youve mountains to write and it all means nothing to anyone but you, but it doesnt matter because youre finally saying something to yourself that you really believe to be true, those days that stretch longer than 24 hours, that come to a jubilant early morning end even though it started off sour, when you wake up and the pillow still smells like her hair and youd grab her hand and ask her to join if you thought she cared, those days when the mountains miles away whisper to you over oceans of time and the land promises a life of fulfillment where you can reach the sublime, when you rock back and forth, palms pressed to your head trying to forget the words that she said, when the moon shines so bright you could stay out till sun rise, when the warmth washes over your skin and the wind brings tears to your eyes. those days can be hard and leave you clutching your brow, asking yourself what happened and how. those days with those whims wont live forever but they will never die. theyll come back no matter your attempt to forget and no matter how hard you try. those days will be silent, those days will be loud. theyll bring you to shame and theyll make you feel proud. those days will come on at night and move you from sleep, theyll destroy all youve worked for and everything you reap. those days will come and leave you breathless with nothing to say. dont ever forget those days. those days are today.

you looked too comfortable by yourself. anyone would have wished they could join you, but would my company have ruined the comfort? or the appearance of comfort? maybe youre just right the way you are. you are as you are. you left a memory there in any case
